A MUD is a sort of virtual world online. A kind of simulation. A lot of people can get accounts and log in to a MUD and chat with each other, fight with each other, and help each other. It can be a lot of fun, and many people spend several hours a day at it.
CandleMUD differs from most MUDs in that it keeps it's focus on real-world issues like history, science, and mathematics, instead of being fantasy based like other MUDs. It also is more family friendly. Anyone who is caught using bad words on the MUD will be immediately punished.
The characters can fight, both with each others and non-player characters. They can also raise crops and animals, work jobs to earn money, and gain political position. It's kind of like the game of Pretend, only you can have more people play it at once and everything is kept track of by computer. Also, it's something adults can do as well as kids, because the computer and social element makes it fun for them.
